King's [The Cathedral] School, Peterborough

Peterborough Diocese of the Church of England

Multi-phase Redevelopment Project. The King's [The Cathedral] School is the Church of England secondary school in Peterborough for approximately 1,000 pupils. Saunders Boston were appointed as Architect and Project Manager following a personal recommendation from the Diocesan Director of Education for all phases.

The development comprises two major new buildings (a Humanities classroom block and a Sixth Form centre), as well as many refurbishments to the existing school facilities.  'Sustainable' technologies within the teaching environment were incorporated where feasible and the school was continually occupied throughout construction.

Saunders Boston managed all aspects of the project including DCSF submissions and negotiations, design team management and contract management.  The Faraday Project was added at a later date as part of the Governments 'Science Laboratories of the Future' programme, which aims to create 'inspirational learning environments' which facilitates the learning of subject areas in a more comprehensive and engaging manner.

The focal point of the scheme is the Science Laboratory – a uniquely flexible environment that utilises the latest technologies and explores the integration of the built environment into teaching and learning experiences. The scheme also included an ICT lab, a breakout/resource study area, a private seminar and a debating space, an external experiment area with 'dropzone' and a Human Orrery. Working closely with The King's School and the Armagh Observatory, Saunders Boston successfully designed and constructed a 'Human Orrery,' a human scale model of the solar system, in the school grounds.

The Orrery is a unique outdoor interactive teaching space that accurately illustrates the motions and positions of the planets in space and visually presents how the position of the Earth relates to other visible objects in the sky. Currently only one other facility of this type has been constructed in the UK.
