SBA ANNOUNCE THE COMPLETION OF THE STEM BUILDING IN BRAINTREE

Saunders Boston was appointed by Colchester Institute as lead consultants to refurbish the existing Sports Hall on the Braintree Campus site into a STEM teaching facility. The new STEM building provides workshop space for a wider range of vocational training and additional flexible teaching space which will allow the College to expand their educations offering.

Retaining the existing building fabric, a new mezzanine floor constructed of steel frame with profiled metal deck and reinforced concrete topping has been inserted into the sports hall to provide a first floor. The facility accommodates brickwork, advanced technology, fabrication/welding workshops on the ground floor and conference, media lab, plumbing workshop, engineering maintenance workshop, ICT classrooms and general classrooms on the first floor. The classrooms on the first floor provide future flexibility allowing opportunities to remove dividing walls in order to convert the teaching spaces into additional workshop space.

The scheme is designed with naturally ventilated classroom spaces and general extract systems for the workshops to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’.
