Access Improvements completed at the Cambridge University Botanic Gardens

October 2017

Work has recently completed on the installation of a new ramp within the courtyard of No. 1 Brookside. The ramp improves access to the Garden Classroom and required Listed Building Consent approval and negotiation with Building Control to provide a suitable ramp within a restricted space.

Earlier phases of work at the Botanic Garden include the refurbishment of No.1 Brookside to provide new accommodation for teaching and administrative staff, along with a new shop and other public facilities. A second phase formed a new public entrance to provide an open welcome, allowing glimpses through the entrance and into the garden beyond.  The works comprised a new, contemporary ticket kiosk and customer facilities set behind new decorative gates.  A third phase extended the existing outbuildings to provide a new garden classroom within the courtyard of No.1 Brookside.

The new entrance was awarded First Prize in the David Urwin Award for its contribution to the townscape of the City of Cambridge 2009.

Completion of Postdoc Centre, Eddington, Development in North West Cambridge

September 2017

SBA is proud to announce completion of the ‘Postdoc Centre @ Eddington’ fit out, which forms a focal point of the world-leading living & working facility on the University of Cambridge’s new ‘Eddington’ development in North West Cambridge. The centre, the first of its kind in the UK, is designed to attract and support postdocs for the duration of their contract.  The Centre is split across two adjacent blocks, one accommodating the reception and a flexible working environment for the staff of the Office of Post-Doctoral Affairs (OPdA) with the other providing a versatile social, learning and conference facility, including a 220 seat lecture theatre and a Committee Room.

The Client was seeking an aspirational, industrial interior with exposed structural concrete walls, soffits and columns.  This aesthetic is complemented by textural acoustic panels, birch ply and architectural lighting linking and highlighting the impressive volume of the open plan spaces.
